Today, “going green” isn’t just good for the environment — it’s also good for business. A Nielsen study found that 55% of consumers worldwide would pay a premium for products offered by eco-friendly and socially responsible companies. In another study, 65% of consumers surveyed said they want to buy from brands that advocate sustainability.
Businesses are taking notice of these consumer habits and doing their part to make a difference. Whether that means installing solar panels on office buildings, using energy-efficient lighting, or stocking up on eco-friendly corporate gifts, there are many steps companies are taking to go green.
One business, in particular, that is prioritizing environmental initiatives is none other than Redwood Classics. InTandem carries products from this Toronto-based clothing manufacturer, and not only do they create high-quality products and corporate gifts, but they’re focused heavily on sustainability, too.
A Commitment to Sustainability, Diversity, and Women in Business
Redwood Classics founder Kathy Cheng has long been focused on making an impact — in more ways than one. She was named on Inc. Magazine’s 100 Female Founders List for 2020 and was awarded the CAMSC Special Recognition Award for her philanthropic work and inclusive local procurement during COVID-19. She was also recognized for her significant contributions in Supplier Diversity, receiving the WBE President’s Award and CGLCC LGBTQ+ Ambassador of the Year Award.
Most recently, however, Cheng has been meticulously preparing the company’s first-ever 10-Year Retrospective on Sustainability and Diversity, a report that showcases their dedication to the cause and also how small businesses can make a lasting impact. Much of what the company has accomplished can be attributed to its “north star,” otherwise known as the three Ps:
- People: A commitment to diverse makers.
- Planet: Apparel for a thriving planet.
- Prosperity: Fostering a locally made apparel value chain.
Some key highlights from the report revealed that an average of 70% of the raw materials Redwood Classics Apparel consumes are knit within a 100-mile radius of their factory. They also found that, by producing locally in Canada, the company is able to minimize shipping emissions and material waste. And finally, Redwood Classics uses landfill-destined deadstock and turns it into upcycled fabric.
“We hope we can make an impact because really, it’s not just about us,” Cheng explained. “It's about everyone else, too, and how can we work together to make a better world. It sounds idealistic, but if we're able to make an impact, that’s the ultimate goal.”
