Project Description

Edgar's Mission is a safe haven for over 400 rescued farmed animals. Many of the residents have either come from intensive confinement or been exposed to the harsh elements – from recently shorn sheep succumbing to hypothermia during the Winter months, to factory farmed chickens who have only ever known life in a barren battery cage. Ensuring that all of the animals have access to adequate shelter such as houses for the chicken and beds for the goats, pigs, cows, and ponies is imperative. Anti-predator lights also fire off throughout the night to deter would-be predators.

MORE ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Ensuring that all of the animals at Edgar’s Mission have access to adequate shelter is imperative. Our young animals, and those who are more vulnerable due to age and ill health, are tucked away safely in our barn of an evening to rest on a bed of golden straw. In Winter they have access to heat lamps or our incubator where required. Our adult sheep, goats, pigs, cows and ponies always have access to sturdy shelters and straw beds - all of which require regular maintenance. The chickens have their very own houses with perches, in which they are locked in safely each night. These houses are elevated above ground to ensure that predators cannot bury under or climb inside. In addition to shelter, Edgar’s Mission ensures that fencing is safe, secure and species-appropriate, water troughs are kept clean and well maintained to ensure a constant supply of clean, fresh water, and the sanctuary is fire-ready in case of an emergency. Last year over $150,000 was spent on sanctuary infrastructure.
